WindowsXP

Start -> Control Panel -> Network & Internet Connections -> Setup or Change your Internet Connection
If it brings up the Internet Properties window, hit Setup
The Wizard will start. -> Next
"Connect to the Internet" -> Next
"Setup Manually" -> Next
"Connect Using Modem" -> Next
enter OnRamp Access as the ISP Name -> Next
enter phone number -> Next
connection permissions "Anyone's use" or "My use only" -> Next
username, password, confirm password -> Next
check the box for a desktop shortcut to the connection -> Finish
to add DNS stuff:
Start -> Connect to -> (right click OnRamp connection) -> Properties -> Networking tab
double click TCP/IP protocol
select 4th radial button for "Use the following DNS server addresses"
enter DNS servers primary and secondary.
click "OK"
click "OK" again.
done.

Windows2000

Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial-Up Connections -> Make New Connection -> Next
second radial button "Dial-Up to the Internet" -> Next
third radial button "I want to set up my Internet connection manually..." -> Next
"I connect through a phone line and modem" -> Next
enter dial-up number
uncheck "Use area code and dialing rules"
click "Advanced..."
under Connection tab:
select connection type "PPP"
select logon procedure "None"
under Addresses tab:
IP address "Internet service provider automatically provides one"
DNS server address "Always use the following:"
enter primary and secondary DNS addresses.
"OK"
"Next"
username and password -> Next
name connection "OnRamp Access" -> Next
select "yes" if you want to setup mail account now
"No" -> Next
Leave the box checked to connect now, uncheck to connect later -> Finish

WindowsME

1. Start -> Settings -> Dial-Up Networking -> Make New Connection (if the wizard doesn't start automatically)
continue with step 1 under Win95/8.
2. same as step 2 under Win95/8 except...
"Server Types" tab is called "Networking"
there is no "Logon to network option"
3. same as step 3 under Win95/8

Windows95/8

  1. My Computer -> Dial-up Networking -> Make New Connection (if the wizard doesn't start automatically)
    enter "OnRamp Access" and see if the modem listed says what type it is (V.90 or Flex)
    press Next
    enter phone number (see above)
    press Next
    press Finish
  2. still in Dial-up Networking folder
    right click the new OnRamp Access icon
    select Properties
    under the General tab, uncheck "Use Area Code and Dialing Properties"
    under the Server Types tab
    "Type of Dial-up Server: PPP...."
    check "Enable Software Compression"
    check "TCP/IP"
    uncheck all others
    click "TCP/IP Settings" button
    click fourth radial button "Specify Name Server Addresses"
    enter DNS servers
    leave WINS all zeros
    make sure the last two boxes are checked or X'ed
    "Use IP header compression"
    "Use default gateway on remote network"
    "OK"
    "OK" again
  3. still in Dial-up Networking folder
    right click OnRamp Access icon
    select "Create Shortcut"
    hit "Yes"
    this will place "Shortcut to OnRamp Access" on the desktop

If you can't find the Internet setup assistant, or just checking settings:

  1. Apple -> Control Panels -> TCP/IP
    "Connect via: PPP" in the drop menu
    "Configure: using PPP server"
    Enter name servers and domain
    File -> Close -> Save
  2. Apple -> Control Panels -> Remote Access (PPP for <8.5)
    Press "Registered User" button
    Name: username
    Password: xxxxxx
    Number: (see above)
    click Options button
    under the Protocol tab
    "Use Protocol: PPP" in the drop menu
    select "Allow error correction..." and "Use TCP header compression"
    "OK"
    File -> Close -> Save
  3. Restart Computer
    Click on icon in menu bar (usually upper right corner of screen)
    select the Finder
    Special -> Restart

MacOS X (Darwin)

Apple -> System Preferences -> Network
Configure: (installed modem should already be selected in this drop menu)
TCP/IP tab:
Configure: using PPP (in drop menu)
DNS servers in box (hit <enter> between entries)
enter domain in Domain box if you want
PPP tab:
just fill in the fields
Service Provider (Optional) : ________
Telephone Number: _____ (enter area code here if necessary)
Alternate Number (Optional): ___
Account Name: ___
Password: ___
PPP Options button: make sure it's got the TCP/IP header compression checked
all other defaults should be fine.
ignore Modem tab and Proxies tab.
hit Save button at bottom right of window.
To connect/disconnect, open the Applications Folder and then open Internet Connect.
