National Domestic Violence Hotline

Emphasis: Website Design, Article Management System, Training

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is connected with an organization we did work for several years ago, The Texas Council on Family Violence. We maintained contact with them and they decided to give us a shot a redesigning the Hotline site. They needed a new look based on marketing materials they had developed. Also they needed a fresh start in regards to the structure of the site. The old site suffered from inconsistent navigation and broken links. It was hard to find information and the information was not structured well.

The new site we built is a step forward for us. Besides being compliant with accessibility guidelines, it also compliant with web standards. This helps the site be backwards and forwards compatible. This is also the first full site we have done using all CSS for the layout instead of tables. I realize to most people this doesn't mean much, but for us it's an important step since it is the direction that modern web design is moving.

On the backend, we built them a small content management system where they could put in articles and set them as a News, Press Release or Action Item. They can set each article to display on the home page or not and also to be moved into an archive. There is also a site search utilizing a new (for us) script which seems to work well.

We gave the client a shell of the site with a couple of pages for each section built out. Our client completed the site build out and maintain the site themselves. The flexible design using css style sheets and minimal graphics allows them to easily make frequent navigational and text updates.
