E-mail Profile and Spam Filter setup for Netscape 6.x

Part I: E-mail Profile setup

1. Account Wizard

  • Start the Account Wizard by opening Netscape Mail & Newsgroups.
  • If this is the first time setting up an e-mail profile, the Account Setup Wizard will automatically start.
  • If not, then start it manually from the Mail window: Edit>Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings>New Account.

2. New Account setup

  • Select "ISP or e-mail provider"

3. Identity

  • Fill in Your Name and your E-mail Address

4. Server Information

  • Incoming Server: Select "POP"
  • Fill in the name of the incoming mail server (mail1.onr.com)
  • Outgoing Server: Fill in the name of the outgoing mail server (smtp.onr.com)

5. User Name

  • This is the login username, it IS case sensitive.

6. Account Name

  • This is the local name of the mail profile. It defaults to your e-mail address. You can change this name to anything you like.

7. Congratulations.

  • Review the settings. You can go back to make any changes if necessary.

Part II: SPAM Message Filter Setup

1. Message Filters

  • Open the Message Filters dialogue from the Mail window Edit>Message Filters click "New..." to begin a new filter

2. Filter Rules

  • Filter name
    give the filter an appropriate name

3. For incoming messages that match:

  • the default settings are great (So far, Netscape does not support an option to filter by message header) "Any of the following" Subject" contains"
  • Fill in *****SPAM***** (this is how our SPAM filtering tags messages in the subject line).

4. Perform this action

  • The default settings are almost great. Let's create a specific folder to put all the tagged messages. We'll put the folder in the same group as your other folders (Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc.).
  • click New Folder
  • Name it SPAM
  • "Create as a subfolder of"
  • "example@onr.com"
  • "Choose this for the parent"

5. The entire rule should look something like:

6. Click "OK" and you'll see the rule in the list of rules. It should have a check under "Enabled"

7. Click "OK" and you're done.
